Ozempic is a weekly injectable medication that helps people with Type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar. It can help reduce appetite and increase weight loss, among other benefits.
Whether you’re starting your treatment or have been using it for a while, it’s important to understand the proper storage guidelines for Ozempic.
Temperature
Ozempic (semaglutide) is an injectable medication used to help lower blood sugar levels and help you lose weight. Just like Insulin and Victoza, it is highly sensitive to high and low temperatures and must be stored under strict conditions.
If you leave your ozempic out of the fridge for too long, it can go bad and become unsafe to use. This is especially true if the temperature in your home or where you are traveling is too hot.
To keep your ozempic safe, you should always store it in the refrigerator between 36degF to 46degF (2degC to 8degC). Unopened ozempic pens can be safely left out of the fridge for 56 days after first use.
However, if your ozempic is exposed to temperatures over 86degF (30degC), it can go bad and you should dispose of it immediately. This is especially true if you live in an area with extreme temperatures during the summer. You may want to consider using a medical-grade travel cooler to ensure your ozempic stays cool when you are on the road.
Light
If you are using Ozempic to help lower your blood sugar levels, you will likely want to store it properly to keep it safe and effective. This medication is sensitive to both light and temperature, so it is best stored in a medical-grade container to protect against light exposure.
When Ozempic is stored out of the fridge, it should be kept in a cool place (86degF-30degC), protected from light and refrigerated when possible. Unopened ozempic can be left out of the refrigerator for up to 56 days, provided that the temperature in your home is not higher than 86degF or lower than 36degF and it hasn’t been exposed to light.
If you’ve opened your ozempic pen and it’s been out of the fridge for longer than 56 days or it’s been exposed to high temperatures, dispose of it right away. It’s not worth the risk to your health. The liquid inside your ozempic pen should be clear and free of any sediment or particles.
Moisture
Ozempic is a medicine used to help control blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. It works by increasing the amount of insulin your body makes when blood glucose levels are high. It also reduces the amount of glucagon (a hormone released by your stomach) that causes your body to produce more glucose.
The drug is usually taken by injection and the solution should be stored in a medical-grade container that protects it from light and heat. These containers are usually made of stainless steel.
If you leave ozempic out of the fridge for longer than 56 days, it can start losing its efficiency and won’t help to lower your blood sugar any more. Even if it’s been re-thawed, the medication is no longer safe to use and should be disposed of right away.
Disposal
If you leave ozempic out of the fridge for longer than 56 days, you should dispose of it (throw away). It will no longer help lower your blood sugar levels and may cause adverse effects.
Ozempic is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which works by stimulating insulin release and reducing glucagon release. This helps control blood glucose levels and can also help you lose weight.
After first use, you can store an ozempic pen in the refrigerator or at room temperature for up to 56 days. The pens should be discarded after that time, even if you still have medicine left in them.
The expiration date will be printed on the label of the carton box or the pen. Unused ozempic pens can be kept in the refrigerator until the expiration date, but must be stored in the refrigerator and not exposed to extreme temperatures.
