PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is a hormonal imbalance that may contribute to acne breakouts. Your physician can diagnose it by reviewing your medical history, performing pelvic exams and running blood tests to check androgen levels.
Acne caused by PCOS often has a hormonal component and appears along the jawline, chin, and neck area. Treatment options for this form of acne may include oral contraceptives or medications like Spironolactone.
1. Cleanse your face twice a day
Cleansing is an integral component of any skin-care routine. Even without wearing makeup, your skin accumulates oil, dirt, sweat and any other environmental debris throughout the day that accumulates onto its surface – potentially leading to inflammation and breakouts of pimples or acne.
Dermatologist Mona Gohara advises washing your face twice each day–morning and night. She notes that morning cleansing helps wake up the skin while night time washes remove any bacteria lingering from previous days’ activities, as well as keeping in mind that epidermal regeneration occurs overnight and should not be blocked by makeup, dirt or oil accumulations.
A great cleanser should be gentle, nonabrasive and without alcohol; soap-based cleansers may dry out the skin, so avoid these altogether. Furthermore, it’s wise to regularly cleanse neck and jawline areas where dirt builds up. Also remember to use lukewarm water; hot or cold temperatures may close pores which prevent dirt and oil from washing away more effectively.
Utilising an exfoliating scrub once or twice weekly can help diminish blemishes, while using a weekly mask is great way to keep skin clear and balanced. Also don’t forget drinking at least 2 litres of water daily in order to stay hydrated!

By killing off bacteria that clogs pores and causes inflammation – leading to acne outbreaks – as well as being an excellent moisturizer, keeping skin hydrated and soft.
To use it, mix one to two drops of tea tree oil with 12 drops of a carrier oil such as coconut, olive or jojoba oil and gently apply with cotton pads on blemishes until dry – avoid rubbing as this could exacerbate acne further! Once dry, you can follow-up with regular moisturizer.
Tea tree oil should only be applied directly onto the skin in small doses and should always be diluted first before applying directly. Also, performing a patch test before applying directly can ensure no allergic reaction develops – the typical symptoms being redness and swelling, however a simple test on your elbow could prevent this issue.

Over-the-counter medication like benzoyl peroxide may help alleviate mild acne outbreaks; however, this method doesn’t address its source: an imbalanced hormonal environment leading to ovarian cysts and irregular periods. Therefore it is vitally important that diet and lifestyle practices regulate this imbalance; other methods include de-stressing and getting plenty of restful sleep.
5. Massage your face
Face massage can be an effective treatment for acne. It helps reduce inflammation caused by acne and improve skin tone while simultaneously reducing fine lines and smoothening out fine wrinkles. Furthermore, massage increases blood flow to promote healthier and brighter skin while stimulating collagen production.
Before beginning a face massage routine, it’s advisable to speak to your physician as it may not be suitable for everyone. In general though, face massage can be used safely for acne. Proper cleansing of hands and face prior to massaging helps avoid infection; and using oil suitable to your skin type (using incorrect oils can clog pores leading to further breakouts).
Face massage can be performed using either your fingers or various tools such as jade rollers, metal rollers or gua sha. When starting out it is recommended that hands be used first as they tend to be more sensitive. Also ensure to choose an oil that does not comedogenic for optimal results and ensure that the oil fits with your skin type.
Before beginning, first cleanse and moisturize your face using an appropriate skin care product. Apply facial massage oil directly onto your fingertips, massaging each part of your face using circular movements until complete. Continue massaging other parts such as forehead, cheeks, neck and jawline until finally massaging your nose and grooves above nostrils.
Face massage should be practiced at least once daily after cleansing and exfoliating your skin, to eliminate toxins, prevent sagging and achieve smooth, even skin in just weeks.
